Horse Trailer Repair For Charity
|
|
I was originally told that this trailer
was painted with acrylic latex enamel and that the
original artist sprayed the clouds with acrylic latex
enamel in aerosol cans. Interior/Exterior house paint.
The artwork and lettering had been done with fine
artists acrylics. I was also told that
the plan was to use polyurethane clear for
the clear coat.
After questioning Angie Leger,
the owner of the trailer, president and founder
of HHH, I sent her for paint from the store where
she had originally been donated the basecoat. The
basecoat paint turned out to be Pittsburg Paints Interior/Exterior
Industrial Urethane Modified Enamel Gloss / Oil, An
Alkyd manufactured by PPG. The paint store had the
formula on file and remixed the color for us. I asked
Angie to also pick up white and black paint that was
compatible with the blue basecoat and to also request
several of the colorants used for tinting the paint.
The aerosoled clouds and horse on the left side of
the trailer was sprayed with Color Place Flat Interior
Exterior Acrylic Enamel purchased from Walmart. The
acrylics were acrylics.
The alkyd enamel has a drying time of 5 to 10 hours. High humidity, cloud cover and
a cold front prevented faster drying while rain limited the time allowed before the trailer had to be finished. We had less than 2 days to make it presentable.
To begin trying to repair the basecoat, we started by washing the trailer with
soap and water using sponges to remove dirt and grime. The acrylic paint used for the lettering and
the horse's rear end lifted when wet with soapy water and was easily rubbed off when wiped with the sponge. The water pressure
from the hose was enough to peel the paint. We used scotch brite to remove all of the acrylic paint and to prep the surface for repainting. The
enamel underneath the acrylics was stained a yellowish brown. Some of the lettering had been
layed out on the enamel with black marker. The marker could not be removed without extensive sanding and priming which we did not have the time to do therefore the violet-black ink may bleed through in the future.
After the trailer was dry, I began to
repaint the blue background/basecoat with my Geo HVLP
full size gun with no thinning of the enamel. The alkyd enamel bubbled to form fairy ring circle
ridges. This was due to having sprayed a coat of basecoat about an hour before a small rainstorm came through. The alkyd enamel in white and black mixed
with blue, violet, yellow ochre and brown toners given
to us by the paint store was then used to paint the
clouds, cloud lettering and horse angel. Clouds were
painted with the white enamel using torn jagged cardboard strips
from a huge box we had in the garage and freehanded
with the Geo. The enamel was thinned with mineral
spirits about 1:1 for airbrushing with the Iwata HP-BCS
and HP-C Plus.
I used my letter stencils (my cheat letters made from poster board) to get
placement for the cloud lettering and freehanded in the letters using a very
light lavender and white using a royal blue outline and shading. I taped and
painted the horse's body then carefully removed the masking and paper to freehand airbrush
in the mane, hooves, eyes, defining outlines of the horse angel, clouds
and the halo while the enameled body was still wet to get the bare minimum
repairs done by the time it needed to be picked up to transport Sweetie, one of Heavenly Horse Haven's horses to an event.
